Angie is a Certified My Smart Hands™ Instructor.
She has had an interest in American Sign Language (ASL) from an early age; she was one of the only Girl Guides in her unit to get her American Sign Language badge.
A few years ago she decided to continue her education in American Sign Language and got her American Sign Language Certificate from Mohawk College. In 2015 she completed the ASL Level 101 with The Canadian Hearing Society and in Fall 2016 completed ASL Level 102. She intends on continuing with her ASL education.
When Angie’s daughter was born in 2009 she decided to teach her daughter ASL as a second language. Angie had done lots of research about all of the benefits of teaching babies ASL and since she already knew the language it made that much easier to apply to their lives. She enlisted the participation of her immediate family. They were skeptical at first but willing to try. She taught them 10 basic signs to use when around her daughter.
By the time her daughter was 11 months old she could sign almost 20 words and speak over 50! There was no frustration in the communication between her and any of the family members. Those skeptics by the way were won over when they saw her daughters communication skills and continually ask for more signs.
Having seen firsthand how effective teaching a child ASL can be Angie decided to pass on that knowledge to other parents. She is very passionate about teaching others how to better communicate with their children before they can even speak. It is an amazing feeling to see the children sign their first word and know that they understand you and vice versa!
Her daughter is now 7 and ASL is still a part of their daily communication.
